like the movie conspiracy theory attach some steel wires to the hard drive and wrap them around it and keep the other ends near a large car battery or make a plug for them to plug them in the 220 outlet to burn the disk. or attach a small explosive to it and contain them in a steel case so you can detonate it without killing yourself.

Format will not destroy the hard drive.
The fastest and not the easiest way is the best way to destroy the harddrive is to slam it flat on the concrete or use a hammer.
Be aware that there are way to ressurrect dead harddrive from the dead but it a very tricky job.

I would think one of those bulk tape erasers (really powerful magnet) would maybe do the trick. You need to actually corrupt the data on the platters, just destroying the electronics would do no good, because the platters could be swapped into a new drive of the same type.

Leave no traces. Take a hammer to it and drive around to different locations dropping smalls pieces of in garbages.
Or Have a campfire tonight and cook it.
Electromagnatism or a microwave will also do the trick nicely.
I suggest all 3 if you are cautious.

Take it from the boiling water and plunk it in cold water for a few minutes. The shell should flake right off leaving the egg intact.

It was too late to reformat your hard drive while the feds were there. The moral to the story is to keep the incriminating evidence on a "travel drive," and keep that travel drive somewhere very, very safe.

the only way to truley ensure that no data can ever be retrieved is to cut the actual disk itself in half or burn it.
