Zidane assaulted him and he didn't react.
Materazzi could of easily charged Zidane for assault but didn't!
I think Materazzi should of got an award for Good Sportsmanship.
Any thoughts?

sorry I'm an Italian fan but I have to disagree with you.He got a red card in the last world cup also he was banned for 2 games so no he shouldn't get it,
Many Italian won this award and I hope an italian wins it again but I dont think it will be Marco.

Once a while I disagree with Juventina :)

First of all, to the BIG LOSER (Dude) left in here, I would like to teach him that Materazzi's father is a great coach and a great person! So, as said so many times, GROW UP... little insignificant speck of dust!

About the question, the sportsmanship award should never be given to any of those two players (Materazzi & Zidane).
Both of them have incredible history of bad behavior and volontary violent play.
In the specific incident (noit so much significant to the final score, because it was just 10 min. before the end of the game) Materazzi did what most of the players do during a soccer game: verbally intimidate or assault opponents... that is etically wrong, but it is allowed on the field unless one of the officials hear the player... then the ref. may or may not take action. Usually, the players do that when the ref. is not around.
Zidane reacted with verbal assault and physical assault: that is NOT allowed in soccer (violent play), and it is punished with the red card and a SEVERE suspension.
Unfortunately, the WORM called Sepp Blatter, with the help of other officials, included M. Platini, they have decided to CHANGE the soccer rules just for this episode: Zidane was suspended ONLY 3 games (and they knew he was retiring) and Materazzi was suspended 2 games too (first time ever in the history of soccer that a player is suspended based on... nothing, just media's pressure)

THAT is the BIGGEST soccer scandal ever! And that is what most of the soccer fans around the world think (except some French fans)

It was also disgusting the superficiality that the French President have taken over this incident!

Bottom line is that neither of the two players should be ever remembered for that episode: those two players do not deserve any recognition.

...and just for the record: having nominated Zidane by the FIFA for the Fifa World Player it is another disgusting joke of the BIG CLOWN Blatter. Probably they will let him have the trophy... incredible!!!

Are you crazy?! Materazzi is one of the lowest, dirtiest players in the whole world.. remember his elbow in Villareal..and just remember all his tackles against Juventus players..especially one against Ibrahimovic last year..and he is always getting yellow card..are judges so blind!? I'm not deffending Zidane, he shouldn't react like that in final..but Materazzi is really dirty player..

Haha. Why should he get the good sportsmanship? At first, he lied he didn't said anything about his sister or mother. But in the end, he admitted saying about his sister. How about a GOOD LYING AWARD for him? That's great. =D
