There is no harm in it, especially if it can best answer the question.

I don't mind people giving me a link to help answer a question. I do it quite often, not as the only answer, but in addition to my answer. I usually try to read the other answers that people have given before me so that I don't just repeat info or give the same links that have already been given; I think that is sort of pointless. And I figure that if the person doesn't like getting links in the answer, they are free not to use them. So links don't bother me. What really irritates me is to get "I don't know" or "no idea" for an answer. lol Guess we all have our little pet peeves!

No I don't, not is that is their only answer. I think that this site was intended to provide people with insight and opinions of people who have experience in the areas in which the questions were asked, If they wanted some lame googled answer, they couldn't gotten that themselves. I think that a site for a source or for support is a great way to add authenticity to an answer, but the link should not be the only answer.

The only exception is if someone asks for "are there Any good websites for...", like this one:

Totally acceptable. That is what the Internet is for, free flow Information Exchange. In many cases now it is copyright violation to copy and paste or even transcribe the data contained. Look at the Microsoft EULA or TOS on Word or Windows Media Player. Post me a link anytime to a site that is 5 pages long and requires an Law Degree or somesuch to understand it.

I prefer it as an asker because I can go to the site myself, and get more information if I need it, check out the credibility of the source, etc.

As an answerer, I do it because I thinks showing the person where to find the information will help them to know where to look next time they have a similiar question, and because there are too many people that post homework questions, and I don't want to instigate homework laziness.

Yes, it shows that at least they may have given some thought to the answer they are giving and Yahoo supplies a place in the answer format for sources titled "Know you source? List it here:". So if you have an site to support what your answer then share it instead of trying to do a cut and paste from a search look-up.

If I ask a question here, I have already exhausted my resources... including the Internet. It's insulting for someone to send me a link to a site I have already been to or answer with "Try searching on the Internet." It's also annoying that people ask here before doing a simple search first. That's just plain lazy.

I feel like that is kind of a lazy way out; I'd be annoyed if I asked a question and got one of those 3-page answers that was mostly links - I think most questioners are looking for OUR opinions/answers from experience, and not what someone else on the web (that they could find as easily as we do) thinks. So, no. I don't like it.

Often a link gives a fuller answer than I personally can give. I want to connect the person to the best and most detailed answer, not just my opinion.

If you just type the address into the answer box, it automatically turns it into a web link. Easy enough! Links are a great way to show that you know what you are talking about, I use them all the time, whenever I can. :)

I do this often because it would take forever to form a synopsis of all the information. If you are asking a medical or technical question, wouldn't you rather get it from a reputable site? That's my thought on it at least. As long as you reference the text and add quotes, it is not considered plagiarism. Plagiarism is when you use another's work as your own.
