In short, nobody NEEDS a Hummer, except maybe military personnel while on duty. They, however, use the original Hummer design that was actually capable, not the ugly one that doesn't have any more capabilities off-road than an Escalade or a Tahoe (just a bigger price tag). People buy the H2s and the H3s as status symbols, whether they are really that rich, or just want to look like they are. I have actually heard stories of people who stretch their credit to the max so they can get one of these things, while living in a tiny one bedroom economy apartment. Most of these people are not secure in their own identity, so they are trying to look impressive to other people in hopes that it will give them satisfaction. Unfortunately, it usually only makes the car companies and oil companies richer. As for off-roading, I know several people who do it, and none of them have a Hummer. They like trucks and Jeeps, vehicles that are less pretentious and more utilitarian (and more capable).

I genuinely believe 4 wheel drive is more a statement..look I can afford a big vehicle..I would guarantee 90% are never used in the 4 wheel mode..I also think they should pay more in car parks they use 1 1/2 spaces I hate parking next to them...I also feel they are a special breed who drive 4 wheel vehicles ...all show...

In Atlanta? No reason at all. Now, up north here, we use 4x4 all the time in the snow. And on my farm, we use our SUV all the time for farm work. 4x4 is a necessity. But in Atlanta, a Hummer is just for show.

No one NEEDS a Hummer. They purchase them simply for the look and the attention.
Oh.. look at me, I can afford a Hummer, I have lots of money. Look at me, look at me.
It's a boy thing.

You certainly don't need one. The truck has become mass-marketed by GM thus, nearly 95% of its owners never take it off the road.

It's called conspicuous consumption. "Look what I have. Don't you wish you could afford afford to waste this much money!"
