My husband just bought us two hermit crabs. When I came home and picked one of them up the pincher fell off and it had passed on. What would make this happen? Do hermit crabs fight with each other??

Dont listen to suspendor (sp?) Hermit crabs need alot of space to move...they do not only need a tank with a bit of water. I have three small hermit crabs. In their tank is 1/2 sand and 1/2 forest bedding. In the middle is a large water dish with stones in it so they can crawl in and out. On the side is a small dish of salt water ( use ONLY seasalt and spring water) The chlorine in tap water burns their gills. Since they breathe through their gills it needs to be fairly humid and you need a heatlamp. I have driftwood and plants in their tank so they can climb. Msg me if you have any other questions. About your crab, he was probably malnourished, mistreated, and stressed before you got him. Dont buy from kiosks, they're horrible to their pets.

I don't think that you will have a problem with the crabs fighting. The main reason for the fights is breeding and they don't breed in captivity. They are very hard to keep alive. They do not take well with change. You have to watch the temperature and humidity, They do like it when you put them in water. They also have a molting stage. Make sure to have bigger shells so that when they grow they will have a home to grow into.

I'd guess that one died of lack of seawater, and the other tried to scavenge him for food. I have only owned one hermit crab, but it was happy in a small reef tank. At the very least, put him in a terrarium with a couple of inches of water available to him. Give him a beach.

Removing Hermit Crabs from their natural habitat isn't very condusive to their survival - while caring for them isn't too difficult, keeping them out of water isn't good for them.

Yes, crabs fight, if there aren't enough shells around to use for shelter and they fight over one.
