About 30 years ago, my husband spotted a young man and asked if he wanted to come to our home. He stayed one night.
He was from Germany and just seeing the U.S.A. He posed no threat to us. He also had to be trusting of those who took him in.

We've adopted many people into our family. My best friend, who knows how many women in Cheyenne, and my father even brought a complete family home. Even though we are generous with our friendships, we have never brought a hitchhiker home. They are too transient and it's impossible to know what you are getting.

The closest I've come is hiring an internet buddy who needed help to paint my house. He did a lousy job. The closest my sister got was bring a rodeo cowboy home who lied through his teeth to hide the fact that he was an ex-convict. The funny thing is Dad would have let him stay IF he'd given his real name and owned up to his past instead of claiming to be someone Dad knew he wasn't.

We were never afraid to bring people home, but the cowboy taught us to be discriminating and know something about them.

One time I came home and there was a woman with her 2 children sitting on my couch. I had no idea who they were. My wife had been out at a restaurant and found them in the lobby. The woman was in an abusive home and she took her kids and was trying to get to her relatives who lived several states away. The restaruant was as far as they could get before the car broke down.

My wife brought them home, fed them, let her make phone calls to her relatives, had them sleep overnight and then drove them all the way to their destination. We never heard from them again but that is one of the things I loved about my wife. She was generous to a fault, always thought of the other person's needs and thought nothing of sacrificing for someone in need. I wish I were more like her... I wish we were all more like her.

Is there something you want to tell us all?

Are you the hitch hiker who has moved in or did you invite one back?

I think Ted Bundy ruined the whole hitchhikers everywhere thing

I picked one up when I was 16. He told me he just quit smoking and needed something to put in his mouth.

Criminey! No.

I did pick one up though, once, and he offered me a funny looking cigarette. Things got kinda fuzzy after that.....
