Actually, some of what people called "dumb advice" is actually right on the money.

For instance, tuna fish contains high levels of methylmercury which can damage your unborn baby's brains, as do many types of seafood. Pregnant women should avoid it, or eat very little. I am choosing not to eat any because I want a smart baby.

Also, cat feces contains toxoplasmosis and can infect you and your unborn baby, with devastating results. For this reason, pregnant women should have someone else clean the litter box, and wash their hands thoroughly, preferably with antibacterial soap, after handling their cats. I would never get rid of my precious kitties, though.

Finally, hair relaxer might be dangerous for your unborn baby, because some of it soaks in through your scalp. My pregnancy book said it should be avoided because it might be unsafe.

As for not eating spicy food, not eating ice cream or pork, and not reaching over your head, that is ridculous! These are all considered safe.

Most of the weird advice came from my grandma...

She told me not to raise my hands above my head, or the baby will get the cord wrapped around his neck. That if I didn't take my vitamins everyday that the baby would be deaf and/or blind. And that if I don't drink enough water that the baby will be dehydrated when he comes out and have to stay in the hospital...

I think she was just trying to scare me into drinking a lot of water and taking my vitamins religiously, but her way of telling me was weird.

This is actually after I gave birth, my husbands relatives wouldnt let me eat pork because they said that It'll cause me to beed to death. And this was right before Christmas and a friend of the family gave us a nice big roast ham and it was so delicious but my husband fought to the death for me not to even eat a bite.

Okay 1st off I am not pregnant right now but with my 1st I was ata store shopping for bedding. I found something I like and I reached up over my head to pull the bag down and this lady says to me " Honey, let me help you, you shouldn't be doing that" I told her it was heavy it was fine. She than say's " I know but you shouldn't place your hands over your head like that it will cause the cord to wrap around the baby's neck. You can't be careful."
I smiled and said thak yu made by purchase and left thinking how obserd this kid is floating in water and flipping himself around me raising my arms isn't going to hurt my baby, whatever.

Don't eat too much ice cream because you'll freeze the balls off and get all girls.

**That's why my mother-in-law told me after the birth of our third daughter, she said I ate too much ice cream and froze the balls off. This time around she's been trying force jalapenos down my throat!!!
