First, you need to set up a password. Go to the control panel and select User Accounts. Next select your user name. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and select change password. Create a password that only you know. Then, whenever you leave your seat then press Ctrl-Alt-Del then press enter. This will lock your computer. To unlock your computer press Ctrl-Alt-Del again and it will ask for your password. Enter your password and hit enter.

If someone is turning your computer on when you're not there then I suggest you set up a log on user password for all users.

Use the windows password protection. There is one for the initial startup of a user. Then there is one for the screensaver that prompts for the password when it comes out of hibernate mode.

Warning: Don't forget to write down the password and be careful about the cap's lock as they are cap sensitive.

There are many password protective programs out there for a nominal price.
Good Luck

Aswell as setting your windows xp password, try this one, when swithing on p.c, press and hold F2. You get an option to set what you call a BIOS password.
In future when the pc is swiched on and before Windows xp kicks in, your pc will immediately ask for a password, rendering the pc useless unless they know this password, even if your computer gets knicked, they wont be able to get data off it!

There you go!

Booby trap it!

Seriously though, you can lock it with a password so unless someone knows the password, they cannot get in.

I am sure there will be someone far more intelligent in the ways of computers on here than I am and they will tell you precisely HOW to do it!!!

Put a screensaver password on your computer.

Also, make sure you have a Windows password enabled in your user account and when you walk away from the machine press the Windows Key and L together to force the computer back to the logon screen. They will need to know your password to get back in.

password protect the system bios (there is a password option in
your computers system setup) that way nobody can get on
the computer no matter what they do unless they crack open
the case and reset the cmos battery.

Warning: don't lose the password for the system bios make 2
copies and place them somewhere safe.

This is a screen shot of it:

Lock your computer when you leave it - password protect it, and then do (depending on the operating system you're using) Ctrl + Alt + Del and click Lock Computer.

Where I work, if you don't lock your computer, you get horse porn put on as your wallpaper, so we learn to lock it pretty quick.

Password to the system log on is something you could try.

There are ways to also LOCK your computer. Your owners manual should be able to tell you.
