The visiting team has the choice of baskets at the beginning of the game, and the teams change baskets at the beginning of the second half.
To begin the game, the referee tosses the ball up between two opposing players in the center of the court. The players jump up and attempt to tap the ball with one hand to one of their own teammates.
T he player with the ball has the option of dribbling the ball, passing, or shooting.

The dribble ends when the player touches the ball with both hands, the ball stops, or the player loses control of the ball.

The ball may be passed, bounced or rolled to another player, in any direction.

Play continues if a field goal or free throw attempt fails and remains inbounds.

After each basket, the ball is put back in play by a throw in from out of bounds, under the opponent's basket.

T wo points are awarded for a field goal, which is a ball that passes through the basket while the ball is in play. Three points are awarded if the shot was made from outside a semi-circle, which is a distance of 23.9 feet at the top, and 22 feet at the sides from the basket. One point is awarded for a successful free throw, or foul shot, attempted by the player who was fouled by an opponent.

Penalties are given for two types of offenses, fouls and violations.

The most common violations are traveling, or moving with the ball without dribbling, double dribble, which is using two hands to dribble the ball, or stopping the dribble and then continuing, and goaltending, or interfering with a shot as it moves downward into the basket.

Most violations are punished by giving the ball to a member from the other team, who throws it in from out of bounds.

Fouls are more serious offenses.

Since basketball is not considered to be a contact sport, pushing, pulling, tripping, charging, and holding are all against the rules.

The offending team is penalized by either giving the other team the ball out of bounds, or by awarding free throws to the player who was fouled.

A free throw is an unhindered shot at the basket, from a line 15 feet from the basket. A free throw is worth one point. Two free throws may be awarded, if the player was fouled in the act of shooting, and misses the basket.

Basketball is 40 minutes of non-stop, action packed, sizzling excitement and is so easy to play.

All you need is a hoop and a ball. Basketball is played by two teams who score points by throwing a ball into the opposing team’s basket.

Players can move the ball around the court by passing, tapping, throwing, rolling or dribbling.

The team who scores the most points are the winners.

There are five main positions on the court. (Point guard, Shooting guard, Small forward, Centre, Power forward)

It is every player's responsibility to try and stop the opposition from scoring.

And every player can push forward to try and make that all-important basket.

The number of points scored depends on where the player is when they are shooting.

The highest number of points is when a basket is scored from outside the 3-point line. Any goals not scored from the free throw line or from outside the three-point line will be worth two.

A free throw from the free-throw line is worth one point. It is an unchallenged shot at the basket. And this is awarded after a technical foul, or a personal foul on a player in the act of shooting.
