It depends how you view history. Some thinkers, like Hegel, view history as moving in a straight line toward some brighter future. In Francis Fukuyama's book The End of History, the world is moving toward liberal democracy and greater peace and stability. Others view the world as cyclical. It gets better, then tends to fall into decline. Rinse and repeat.
Personally, the cyclical view seems more realistic. That means that the world is probably never going to reach anything approaching perfection. Humans are just too hungry for power and personal pleasure.

Any of us alive today? No, definitely not.
Is the world on a slippery slope to nowhere? Well, in a few billion years we'll be swallowed up by the sun, so in that sense at least, yes.

we are on a slippery slope, but it's to world war III and a restructuring of power... look back over history.. we are violent, it's in our nature.. and the world is poised with the right tension... all it will take is the right catalyst and it will snap again like it has so many times before.

We're on a slippery slope - it doesn't mean we can't climb back up. The slide's not too steep. Yet. We don't have long to change tack though.

Yes, we are poisoning ourselves with new chemicals being indiscriminately scattered around, many of which have cumulative effect upon the human body. there is no control over what manufacturers throw away, bury in landfill or allow into the water system. I know laws are in place to prevent this but they are ignored.

People have been asking the same type of questions for as long as people have been writing things down. Somehow we survive.
