it would reach its terminal velocity (the fastest it can possibly go without added propulsion). humans terminal velocity is about 200mph as a curled up ball. and from some quick working out i did last night i figured that if you take the weight and then times it by the dimensions of the pea before dividing it by distance to fall, its terminal velocity should be around 25mph. it shouldnt hurt too much, for the pea will be squashed on impact, it will feel very similar to a heavy raindrop, so the answer is no, it wont hurt. if you do the same calculations for a one penny piece (one cent) then it will probably lacerate your skull and penetrate your brain... very painful.
if you want to ask me some more science questions email at am1993@hotmail.co.uk.
*extra question*-my twin brother is turning 14 next month, can anyone think of any good presents?

NO it's not true. It's one of those dumb myths. The pea would quickly reach a terminal velocity of maybe 50-80mph best case, you would just notice it.
Also the fact that this dumb myth mentions the Empire State building, which is now just a tiny dwarf building vs. all those really tall Asian ones, just goes to show it's all old hat, from another age.

Dropped from the empire state building, a pea would accellerate at 9.8 m/sec squared. It would keep speeding up until it reaches its terminal velocity. Terminal velocity is when an object's velocity and air resistance are equal

Mythbusters did a test on the more common, pennie dropped from the Empire State building. Basically wind resistance slows it down, no to mention the extremly high and volitale winds surrounding any tall structure would more that likely deflect it off coarse anyway.

A pea dropped from that height would probably only reach about 25-35 km/h (not very fast in mph) at terminal velocity.
It might go splat and give you a green spot in your hair but it definitely will not kill you.
(A frozen pea would sting more).

Yes. As the pea falls down, it gains speed. I don't know if it would be lethal, like if you were hit by a penny dropped from the same height, but it would definately sting like getting shot with a bb gun.

No, air resistance would prevent it from going too fast, it would prob be going as fast as you could throw it.
Don't you guys watch mythbusters? They dropped pennies in freefall and determined that they were falling at about 60mph. They shot a penny at someone's hand at that speed and it just stung him.

a bullet dropped would hurt, probably not a pea.
here we get hailstones falling hard enough to make a car roof dented in dimples like an orange skin.

No it would reach terminal velocity due to air resistance very quickly.
