The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) was the first electronic digital computing device[1]. The machine, conceived in 1937, was capable of solving up to 29 simultaneous linear equations and was successfully tested, though its input/output mechanism was still unreliable in 1942 when its inventors left Iowa State College for World War II assignments.
Please see resource [2] for more information on this computer.
Charles Babbage was the first to conceptualize and design a fully programmable computer as early as 1820, but due to a combination of the limits of the technology of the time, limited finance, and an inability to resist tinkering with his design, the device was never actually constructed in his lifetime.
Please see resource [3] for the history of computers and how they came about.
Hope this helped!

When Were Computers Inveted?
SO that people could use spellchecker?
But seriously Charles Babbage invented the first accepted form of a computer which was mechanical.

Depends on what you consider a computer. As most people know them a computer is a mechanical device. But by name alone a computer is anything that has the ability to compute. meaning anything with a function. So I guess the oldest known computer is the Universe itself, formed in the BIG BANG about 13 billion years ago. Beyond that is still up for debate amongst our scientific community.

It depends on your definition of a computer. If you say programmable, uses electricity then I'd vote for a1884 Patent by Hermann Hollerith for his mechanical tabulation methods.
"Hollerith developed the tabulator in response to the need to expedite and simplify the tabulating of statistical information gathered in the 1890 United States Census. Statistical data on sex, age, location, family size, birth date and nationality were punched in predetermined locations on the card.
The cards were automatically tabulated and semi-automatically sorted. Electric wires in the card reader made contact with mercury in a cup through holes in the cards to complete an electric circuit and "read" the data. The electric signal from the contact activated the relevant counter on the panel and caused the hand to register the count. Each cabinet tabulated one type of data. The count appeared first on dials representing each state and then in an overall national total." #1
His company eventually became IBM

I think it was a guy called Charles Brabridge in the 1800's, with a mechanical computer (i.e. no electricity)

In the early 70s then a computer took up a room & had very limited memory, if any at all! Now a laptop can store lots of stuff! The internet wasn't invented yet!

Hi. The first devices were analog, not digital, and if you include the orrery then the answer is centuries ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrery
