I think you can do it. There are a ton of vacant apartments in Chicago. You can find them on craigslist, the Reader, or by walking an area with a cell phone and calling the phone numbers on the "For Rent" signs.
The owner probably lives very close and usually is willing to show you the apartment immediately. Be polite, friendly, and professional during the meeting. Someone will offer you the apartment if you put a check in their hand. Not everyone does a credit check. Tell me where exactly in the city you want to live in, and I can give you more area-specific information.

Probably not. You need to have some sort of credit to rent an apartment. Try finding a friend who has room for you to move in or who at least has a credit card and can apply for the apartment. If you don't have a friend who can do that, apply for one of those cheapie credit cards BUT DON'T USE IT!!! You'll be in more trouble than you can believe. Just use it to establish credit to get the apartment. I'm pretty sure you can get an apt. in Chicago at 18. If not, lie and say you're 19 or 20.

DON'T apply for a credit card as is advised.

You don't need it to rent an apartment.

Check out craigs-list.com.
See if you can find a roommate to share the rent.
But have another adult go with you so you are safe
and not getting scammed.

If you can get someone to cosign for you, you can probably get an apartment. You'll need something to show you are employed.
