I would say that living in a constant state of paranoia is much worse than either of those. You left out: hurricanes, lightning, crime, volcanoes, asteroids, UFO's and insane asylum escapees.

I think living where there is the eartquake threat is worse. With a tornado you can go underground in shelters and be fully protected from the harsh elements. Yes you could loose your home and it gobbles up whole towns at times but either way the devestation is great. Earthquakes on the other hand are far worse. Earthquakes are usually based on tectonic plate movements and if you live along the fault line then an possible eruption can be followed by the quake. When the plates rub together they make the quake and hten it can open up the earths crust in more sensitive areas and then lava can come from underneath. Whether you are underground or not lava can and will get you and I think that is alot scarier.

Tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons, you can control your environment to a point but, a bad storm will toss you and your house miles away. In an earthquake the worse would be you get your cage rattled and maybe your house will collapse but, at least you can run from that. You have more you can do while it is happening.
If you are thinking of moving to the west coast. Welcome. If not, good luck.

I would not want to live where there are earthquakes for the simple fact there is NO warning. At least with Tornado's-you are warned and can take some kind of precaution.... With earthquakes, you could be driving along and the road beneath you disappears.

I live in a city built near a fault line (the New Madrid) and where there are numerous tornadoes every year. I'm not afraid of either. No matter where a person lives, there is the possibility of some sort of natural disaster. There are also possibilities of danger from unforeseen threats such as fire or terrorism. I think for someone to be happy with where they live, they have to have a good relationship with their own Higher Power. My Higher Power is God. I trust in Him and I believe I live right where He wants me to live.

I live in San Francisco. There were big earthquakes in 1906 and in 1989. I missed both of them. I wasn't yet born in 1906, and I was visiting relatives in New York, Virginia and Kentucky in 1989. There probably won't be another big quake in my lifetime. There may be many tornadoes in any given year at places prone to have them. The choice is easy to me.

I live in So Cal and I would take that over the midwest anyday but honestly it is more about the warm winters than trying to get away from tornados.

It's a toss-up. Unless you live in a trailer. In that case take your chances with the earthquake - tornadoes FEED on trailers.

I think, earthquakes, there is no warning, with tornadoes there is still some sort of warning.
But i actually agree with the previous guy.
