I'm going to presume that you want Boston info since you posted here. It's amazing some of the answers you got, but here's the scoop.

ALL Boston cab associations are required to charge the same amount. You do get assessed amounts for tolls as well.

The Rates of Fare are as follows:

Meter Rates:
$1.75 for the first 1/8th mile or less
$0.30 for each additional 1/8th of a mile

Waiting Time:
$24.00 per each hour

Flat Rate:
Dedham and Lexington are no longer flat rate communities and shall be charged metered rates
$2.60 per mile (as quoted in the “Official Flat Rate Guide”)

MassPort and Mass Turnpike Tunnel Fees:
All Trips to Logan Airport: $ 2.25
All Trips from Logan Airport: $ 6.00

Here are the cab associations should you choose to contact them (area code 617).

Boston Cab, 536-5010
Checker Cab, 536-7000
City Cab, 536-5100
ITOA, 825-4000
Metro Cab, 782-5500
Town Taxi, 536-5000

That said, depending on where you're going, you might be better of taking the "T" (subway system). It's efficient; it's safe and very convenient to many parts of Boston. From the airport, you'd just hop on the #11 bus to the subway station, then take the blue line inbound most likely 4 stops to Gov't Center where you could switch to the green line or wherever. See mbta.com for more info.

Hope that helps!

Is your question specific to Boston? The fare is based upon mileage---in 1/8 mile increments, I believe. With a minimum charge, the minute you get into the cab.

Cabs from Boston to Logan Airport tend to be rather expensive. There are tunnel fees and MassPort fees added to the fare.

Expect to pay about $25 from Downtown Boston to Logan.

I recommend taking the subway or Silver Line
Cost of public transportation: $1.25

If you are just toddling around the city, tho...cabs are pretty reasonably priced. Particularly if you have a travel ling companion or two..

It's going to vary based on city, and cab company. Also, in Boston they charge the tolls and a toll fee for going into the tunnels/bridges, etc depending on cab company as well. Usually they just charge a minimum, and then it goes up with every 1/4 mile or something similar. You could contact cab companies around Boston like Town Taxi, Metro Cab or Yellow Cab.
