Male birds sing to let other males know where their territory is and where it's bondaries are. Somtimes you will hear two birds singing back and forth to each other (called countersinging). They will also sing in the spring to attact a mate...to advertise that they have an available territory. Female birds do not "sing" like males but do communicate by calls and chips.

Birds sing (really called calls or communicating) in for many things, mostly mates, some say communicating (parrots are as smart as a four year old)maybe even language, they may have specific calls for like danger, and other words like that. But the
mostly for mates, I'm not sure about the communicating part, but I bet they have something going on. Oh, yes and terriotory.

It's all about communication. Whether it be for territory, mating, food, danger, or anything else that the bird needs to say....well, to a basic degree...they're not that sophisticated.
