Usually the gypsum board (wall board) ends up so damaged that it has to be removed as well. There really is no right way to get the adhesive off -- scrape, dampen, scrape some more, sand, try some commercial products for removing adhesives, scrape again... It's a long and painful process which you will probably quickly regret trying. The quickest, easiest, and least labour-intense is to apply 1/4-inch gypsum board over it, and start fresh for your new wall finish, whether it be new tiles, paint, or whatever you've chosen. Good luck!

Sadly, new drywall is the answer...if it was a concrete floor then an old iron and paint scrapers will work this I know from personal experience...if it is possible to apply over the wall w/o removing the old drywall then go for it if not tear it out and start over...although paneling is an option...there are some nice wooden varieties(there ARE too)

I go to walmart for EVERYTHING!! There is a spray that will disolve the glue, or just try steam and a putty knife, or mask it by sanding it down then buying a texture spray to use over it (texture your walls, less work and headaches and your arms won't be as tired the next day....LOL)
