Does anyone know any good alternatives to depression? What have you used? What results did you have with the alternative? What would you recommend? Thanks....

I was put on anti-depressants about five years ago and the side effects became so horrible I just quit last thanksgiving, had I been warned, nobody in their right mind would take those chemical time bombs, and I still suffer severe Persistent Adverse Neurological Effects Following SSRI Discontinuation, did you know that among the many bad side effects of SSRIs, rem sleep is virtually non existent because of the way they work in your brains neurotransmitters, rem deprivation is a known method of torture in prison camps, I've tried many natural remedies and found Omega 3 works best for me, the only one I can get down is coromega orange flavor packets, all the others are just too nasty (like dead fish) St Johns wort, Valerian etc. caused anxiety and more trouble sleeping.

Depression is a physical ailment, just like diabetes or high blood pressure. Your brain does not process seratonin properly. No big deal, and highly curable with the right treatment.

St John's Wort worked for a while for me, it's been a while but I want to say I took 1 pill 3 times a day. I think they were 30 or 300mg (whatever the standard pills were). I bought a good brand of vitamins so the quality was pretty much assured. I also have tried Sam-E, did nothing for me, but works for some ppl. I work out every day and try to eat right.
I am on zoloft now and it works great, just makes me feel like me again. I started with Ambien for sleeping when I first started on Zoloft as not sleeping was also an issue. I only took it for a couple weeks, then I could get to sleep on my own.

Relaxing is easier said then done. But there are some techniques which can help you.

Take baths.


Breathe deeply.

Watch your favourite film couched up on the sofa.

exercise. Even a brisk walk can alleviate your mood as endorphins go into your body, making you feel happier.

do something that keeps your mind busy: crossword, playing an instrument, reading.

give yourself things to look forward to eg. days out, a favourite meal or some new clothes.

I find this one the most effective:

take a piece of paper and make 2 columns.

left hand side - anxious thought.

right hand side - rational thought.

eg

left: I'm no good at anything, i am useless and no good to anyone.

right: i am good at listening to people, i am a useful person who helps my friends when they need me. I am worthy of love.

Write down every anxious thought you have, and write down a comment to put a positive light on things.

If you do this every time you feel down, it's easier for you to see when you are feeling low. eventually ul do this in your head and you can identify when you are sad.

I have to tell you , they (Dr,s') have had me on EVERYTHINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ,,, about 8 weeks ago I decided these were not doing anything but making it worse so it seemed to me , so I chose (I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS) to take myself off all meds . I felt the drugs were just masking the problems , and I felt I needed to deal with them head-on. My depression is now in check. This is just MY story , by no means would i downplay that there are people out there that do need the drugs to help them . Like I said this is just MY story and personal experience.

depends on cause of depression. and type.. dysthymia or major depresssion? psychosis present? suicidal? internal situational/external cause?
if hormonal can use hormones.
if thyroid very sensitive thyroid test is sometimes the only one to catch it. then those meds.
poor diet can add to depression.
there are several other medical causes..
if its situational help to change the situation and maybe temp meds to get through could do it.
some people need much more than that. if its chemical or long term...
there are many meds and you can look them up be very careful of med or psych advice on the web.
i do give the best free bad medical advice around..why pay for bad medical advice ?
i heard most herb remedys don't work reliably. check on the NIH and European studies before listen to non professionals...
ask questions at universites too, check on recent studies through site below,

I find being happy is a good alternative to depression.

get out of the house..take a walk...work in the garden..visit friends..write letters..think of others not yourself...get a hobby...let the light get to the back of your knees....ask a doctor for help....drink tea, it calms you down and helps you cope..bananas help too...as does crackers, and turkey and milk.
