under optimum contidions of food and enviroment, asexual reproductions works great.
When any strain is put on the food source or the envirnment then sexual reproduction allows for an exchange of genetic traits with the most viable traits being passed on... the poor traits aren't passed on because the organism dies

Asexual reproduction is almost unheard of in animals because it limits variability, and therefor viability of a species. It was popular early in the history of life because it was simpler and more reliable in a big world with few compatible potential mates around.
Sexual reproduction is the rule in both animal and vegetable organisms. Without it, evolution would be very difficult indeed!

Oops. That's funny. The very first plant that was evolved accidentally in a lab [bred for aquaria] escaped into the Mediterranian Sea, where it is taking over a lot of undersea realty. And it's asexual!

Asexual reproduction when there are no available mates in order to continue the species. Sexual reproduction to produce genetically varied offspring, thus opening up the possiblity of evolving or adapting.
