If the child is doing it to himself, no harm done. An adult to shake a child vigerously, that is definitely brain damaging!

No. You can't give yourself shaken baby syndrome. If the music is loud I'd worry about hearing damage though.

Wow....I think that this one should be turned over to a pediatrician. I feel that it could very well be harmful to a baby to do what you are describing and it sounds to me like it could cause some of the same problems that occur with shaken baby syndrome.
Please for the sake of your little nephew find an answer from a professional to this question.
It sounds like dangerous behavior to me.
Don't wait to take some kind of action.
Good luck.

it will not cause brain damage, but if the music is loud it could result in hearing loss. and with it being heavy metal music i would be concerned about the baby picking up bad language.

I'm not sure whether it will actually cause brain damage, but it is not a good practice in any way. Without wanting to sound judgemental, your sister in law perhaps does not understand what babies need and how they develop. Try to bring it to her attention in a caring way, letting her know you are concerned.

If he himself is bobbing is head, or headbanging, then I don't think he will get the shaken baby syndrome, only if someone other than him, and adult has grabbed him and shaked him would he get it.

How old is the child... I really don't think she should be playing loud music aroud him but if he's old enough to shake his head to the music I don't think he'll get SBS. My 2yr. old wakes up from his naps and sits on the couch shaking back and forth real hard we've tried to stop him but he won't. The doctor said just to leave him alone nothing won't happen to him he just does it to feel like someones rocking him to sleep.

The brain might not get any damage, I'm more worried about his ear drums.

I really dont believe he will get brain damage. He might hurt his neck or even make his head hurt though.
