Have you ever stand in a long line up at the cash register only to see some idiots in front of you insisting on using their debit and credit cards on small things under $10 or $5 like a pack of gum or a bottle of water. Each person doing this probably takes another 3-5 mins to the line up. I can understand if you are buying big ticket items but to use cards to buy a pack of gum, come on! There should be an express check out line for those paying cash, afterall the merchants make an additional 4-5% because they don't pay commission to the credit card companies.

If it takes the stores credit card system 3-5 minutes to process then they are having a malfunction. It isn't the customers fault then. It should take no more than maybe 20 - 30 seconds to process. You might want to start shopping at another store. Consider the "old" days when people would stand and rummage through their wallets/purses for cash or take forever writing a check, then the clerk asking for the driver's license and taking down their info, running it through the cash register. Now that takes forever.

No. Because sometimes I want to use the ATM but then there's a $2 fee. I'd rather go to Walmart and get a $2 gallon of milk and get the cash back free. Why pay a fee when you can get something for the money? If it takes too long for the few people in front of you to checked-out then it's a problem with the store. Ask the store why they have 15 checkout lanes and only have 1 open.
I use my debit card all the time and it doesn't take long at all. You don't need to sign a signature or anything.

Frustration is understandable, but the retailers are glad to get payment of any kind. Another way to look at it is the fees on credit cards are seen as the cost of doing business -- for them.

It is also a waste of time watching some little old lady counting out money, including change, as if she'd never figured out before coming to the register that she'd need cash.

One thing is certain, the speed of transactions will be increasing, as they are already. Many retailers are no longer requiring a signature for a transaction under $25 now.

Here's something from the Visa site on what I'm talking about...

The easy way to pay, every day

''Visa Contactless is a new payment feature for Visa cards that makes your purchases quicker and more convenient. With Visa Contactless, you simply hold your Visa card up to a secure reader, instead of swiping it. Most of the time, signatures are not required and you will be able to speed through checkout.''

No, actually, it doesn't bother me. It used to, but now that almost everywhere has those little debit-card things, it doesn't take any longer than it does to pay with cash.

Actually, I find people who hold up the line trying to pay with exact change to be FAR more annoying. Their total is $13.88, they've given the clerk a $20 bill, and they're standing there, sifting through their wallet/purse/pockets saying, "I've got the change! Just a minute! I know there's a dime in here somewhere! And that's one penny, two pennis.....uhmmm.....I think I've got another penny in my other pocket......" SHEESH! Just let the clerk make the change! It's their job!

What store are you going to? It does not take 2 to 3 minutes to use a debit card. I'll use mine if I have no cash available, but not usually for anything small. Its too easy to lose track of spending that way. In reality it probably takes more time waiting for the cashier to give change than it does to use a card. Ya swipe it before they finish ringing you up, punch in your pin number and push a button.... simple. Its not exactly one of the worlds leading problems is it?

This is the stores fault. They normally require a minimun. Some people use these cards because they earn free points, miles, etc. If you are really in that much of a hurry, go at a slower time, chose a new store, or prepare in advance so you aren't stoping in to buy this little thing or that little thing. You are slowing down the line also if you come in for one little thing when you could have bought it at a time when you were shopping more completely.

Sometime carrying only debit and credit cards for safety reason may not be so safe after all. I read in the newspaper in Mexico, muggers are taking revenge on people who carry no cash by forcing them to eat dog sh*t. In China, mugger stabs their victim when they don't get cash. The bills there are mostly in red, so the saying goes "muggers are determine to see red... one way or another. So I always carry some bills around in case. Better to lose your case then get some psycho criminal angry. You never know what they may do.

no, many people do not carry cash for safety reasons...it's not my choice to decide how they choose to pay, and furthermore it should never be expected that you can get in and out of a store quickly, plan ahead, leave so you have time and don't need to rush then it will not be a concern if you are in line 3-5 minutes longer.

No, those people don't bother me at all. What I find annoying are judgemental people who call everyone who disagrees with them idiots.

In any normal store, using an ATM or credit card takes about 30 seconds, maybe a minute, not 3-5 minutes.

Well in some places they refuse to accept debit card payment if the purchase is under $10, and I think that's reasonable.
