Check the battery with a digital volt meter. It should read about 13-13.5 volts while running.

To the best of my memory, '79 650 Yamahas were still running points.

If the bikestarts ok but wont run, I'm guessing your problem is not likely to be battery related.

My suggested check list would be:

1. Ignition points.
2. Carburettors, especially the diaphragms.
3. Continuity in coils when hot.

Good luck with the venerable old Japanese copy of British engine.

Check the charging system. It's probably running until the battery goes dead. When you charge the battery, there's enough voltage to run the bike. When the bike stops running, is the battery dead? If so, then the charging system is bad.

The early CDI Yamahas were notorious for CDI failures.

If the bike starts and runs when it's cold, but dies when it gets hot, won't re-start until it cools down - this is a strong indication of a bad CDI.

will it idle? are you sure it's a electrical problem and not a carbuerator issue?
