Or are they supposed to not "melt down" ?

What I do is cut around the edges and it keeps the candle burning straight across.. BUT.. that means that I have to cut around the circular edge of the candle a couple or more times a day

The issue stems from the fact that the heat from the flame is so localized that the larger the diameter of the candle, the less heat is spreading to the exterior. Heat does rise afterall, and in that small a flame, will not radiate very far on a horizontal plane.
