When I let my computer run for several days because I have open windows and stuff I have not yet time to consult seriously, eventually, it starts getting sluggish and programs no longer respond properly. At times it gets so bad I can't even turn it off and have to hit "reset". I suspect it's because cache memory and the like are becoming clogged. How do I prevent this without having to restart the computer?

Ok. Let's be clear. I know all about antivirus and antispyware. I don't want to "speed up" the comp. Just to know if there is a procedure to periodically clean up the cruft without having to do a reboot and taking the pains to note down all that was open at reboot time to get back to the same point.

You can't. It has to do with the swap file, memory caching, memory leaks, software updates, etc. There is no way to prevent that on a Windows based PC. They need to be rebooted about once a week minimum to keep them running properly.

While scanning for spyware, cleaning the registry, defrag, and msconfig can reduce the problem some, it will never eliminate it.

Good luck with that! Unfortunately computer programs have Memory Leaks. Anything from Microsoft is notorious for this. The best way to keep this from happening is keep up with the latest software, the latest hardware, and restart your machine frequently. If you really want something to speed up your PC consider switching to Linux and open source programs as opposed to Microsoft products.

There is also a possibility of having spywear and other hacker related stuff on your PC...and to get rid of that I'd recommend completely formatting your hard drive and re-installing everything. When you do use Zone Alarm Firewall and AVG Anti-virus.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Not enough memory. With Windows XP, you should have 512MB of RAM (or more). Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com and get more.

Type MSCONFIG from RUN (at the Start menu) Go to the Startup section and uncheck programs that you do not need. But keep your antivirus working.

Once a week, do a spyware scan, and a virus scan. Also, see if your computer needs to be defragmented.
