I've been using spreadsheets for over 20 years. They are the bee's knees.
I use MS Excel but there are others available. They will all do far, far more than even a heavy user like me will ever discover, such as:
act like a database,
store data for mail-merging (envelopes, standard letters etc)
sort and filter information,
forecast profit/loss,
'what-if' scenarios,
charts,
totals, averages, all sorts of calculations.
The list is endless

Agreed, using Spreadsheets is not scary and can even be fun, really! They are very flexible, powerfull, can collect/collate/filter and present data in many forms. Microsoft's Excel is argueably the best though there are many others that can be used on PC, Mac or Linux OS. I have read several lab tests for free spreadsheets and OpenOffice.org 'Calc' usually comes out the best.

I use excel everyday and if used properly it is one of the most flexible and useful bits of business software out there I think the same is true of any other comparable spreadsheet package
