The old century is ending and the new century beginning. Turning from old to new!

This is when the calendar changes from one century to another, and, believe it or not, this does not occur at midnight of the year ending in 99, but in the year ending in 00. That's when the old century actually "turns" into the new one.

Turns of century only come once every 100 years, so many of us have lived through an even more significant turn--that of the millennium.

Given the life spans today, it's possible for someone to say that they were alive for two turns of a century, but I doubt that anyone who saw the dawn of the twenty-first century will be around for the next turn of the millennium in another 994 years. :-)

Turn of the century means -The beginning or end of a particular century, as in That idiom dates from the turn of the century, that is to say, about 1900. This expression was first recorded in 1926.

This is also used for completion of one hundred year of any event happened. For example india got independence on 15th august, 1947 and this event will be turning a century on 15th August 2047.

Because the end and beginning of a century signifies the end of an old era, and the beginning of a new one. This means change is expected or foreseen.....hence the term "turn of a century"

OK, when you are reading the pages of a book, for instance, and you TURN the page of that book, you have literally "turned the page" have you not?

The same concept applies to the phrase "Turn of the Century." When we "turn" it means we are done with the previous thing, concept, etc. In this particular case, switching from the "old" century to a "new" one.

Hope this helps!

It is when one hundred years is over and the next one begins. Like going from the year 1999 to going to the year 2000. That is called the turn of the century.
