They certainly have a good shot. A 2-0 lead isn't insurmoutable, but it will be difficult for the A's to recover, especially heading to Detroit.
As for the World Series, they're not overmatched against either the Cards or Yanks. And anyone who says something like, "They can't beat the Mets," has absolutely no baseball knowledge or an understanding of how probability works - the Tigers are an excellent team, and anything can happen in a seven-game series.
Personally, I think it would be more surprising to see the Mets beat the Tigers than the other way around. To me, the Tigers have been the best team in baseball all season, and I see no reason why that should now change.

Good enough to get to the World Series, good enough to beat the Cardinals, but not good enough to beat the Mets.
To Craig S, below.....
If you think I have no baseball knowledge, you are a fool. If the Tigers are the best team in baseball, wouldn't their record reflect that? They, after 162 games weren't the best team in their division, and finnished with a worse record than 3 other teams. Their starting pitching and offense has been inconsistant all year, and their defense is not especially good. A team like the Mets that presses can force errors, and make a team have to try to make big defensive plays.
As far as probabilite is concerned, wether or not the Mets and Tigers play, or how they play has less to do with probability than performance. This isn't Texas Hold'em, it's baseball. If you speak of probability then Jeter exceeded his probability of total # of hits, and A-Rod fell short. So if probabilities are sertain, as you are infering, Bonderman is due to blow up and allow 8 or 9 runs sometime soon, so it cuts both ways.
Comparing the Tigers and the Mets using baseball knowledge and statistics, theMets have a clear edge, thus making them a favorite. If a Tiger fan wants to say that his team will overcome the odds and win, that's fine, but to dispell the reality of the disparity between the teams is foolish.

The Tigers have not won the ALCS yet. They could tie it up as early as Saturday (expect to get wet in the first 3 rows). If the Cardinals and Mets were to go seven, would the Tigers have to sit on their hands for a week before the Series starts? Would that help or hurt them? Would they be rested but not sharp? All too intangible for anyone outside of Vegas or AC to predict. I will go out on a limb and predict that the Tigers clinch the AL pennant at home by Sunday. How's that for daring?
