I don't think it was solely the formation to blame i think its just that most of Englands players are over paid and over-rated.
Stick a bunch of the lower paid English lads on the pitch instead of the ones that are going to make the F.A. the most money and they will probably be better because they will be thinking "this is my one chance and if i blow this i'm out" and then perhaps the so called "quality" high profile english players will buck up their ideas.

Basically Macca needs to make some major changes to the line-up not just the formation and wake some of the lazy glory boys up who think they don't need to play well because the manager would never drop them.

Not exactly the formation but the personel involved. It was meant to be 3-5-2 but that means 5 midifelders NOT 5 defenders. This meant they had 5-3-2 and got over ran in the middle of the park, espcially as Parker was meant to be the attacker leaving a lot of the times a 2 man midfield.
As the two full backs were being pulled out of postition this exposed the back 3 and pulled them all over the place. If they had opted for Wright-Phillips and Richardson as the 2 wing backs this would have bolstered the midfield, given more attacking options and a more consistent defence.
When SWP first came into the Manchester City team he played as wing back in a 3-5-2 formation
