Each colored number represents how many "mines" are located in the surrounding 8 spaces. Think of it like a tic-tac-toe board, The colored number is the center square, one to eight mines will fill in the other squares, relative to the colored number.

If your first click in a new game results in the number '1' then there is one square with a mine, and seven safe squares. If its a '3' then there are three squares with mines and five safe squares. The first few clicks may rely completely on luck.

Blank squares (no number in them) will open a portion of the map. This open portion will be bordered by squares with colored numbers. This is what you want (the more jagged the better). This allows you to determine mine locations using basic math rather than relying on sheer luck.

Open the game. Click on a square. A number will show up. That number represents the number of mines in the 8 squares around the one you've clicked. To see these squares, hold both mouse buttons over a number. like this:

XXX
X4X
XXX

can mean

bXX
X4b
bbX

Got it?

When you are sure about where there's a mine, right click the square, so a little red flag will show up on it. Notice that, at the counter of how many mines are on the game, it'll have one less mine.
