Well, it's illegal to build aprtments with asbestos so if you live in a new one then you are safe. If you live in a new one it should have been all removed or the landlord was required to tell you in was still in there before you signed the lease. I may even be wrong about the landlord being allowed to keep it in there..by now it may be required that all asbestos be removed. You can find that out with a couple quick web searches I'm sure. As far as symptoms go I have friends who are just now developing them after working with asbestos 25 years ago. In your shoes I'd ask my landlord if he/she was approachable and not a pain in the neck that would hold it against you and look fora reason to evict you. If you didn't mind paying about $250 you could have a building inspector come over and look around..if he finds anything you could have grounds for a nice lawsuit anyway. Sueing may not appeal to you, but if there is asbestos your medical bills won't be cheap. I think the chance of it being asbestos is slim though. Good luck.

The years in which asbestos materials were used should be documented, but I'm someone will zip you an answer containing them. As for symptoms, probably never. Asbestos is an airborn particle. It was mostly used in those foam-like cardbord ceiling tiles. They are solids, which means the particles are all stuck together. The problem only occurs if you agetate them. You have to knock the asbestos loose to get enough to run any risk of exposure. Just sitting there under ceiling tiles that contain asbestos is almost no risk at all.
