Damned good question. Quarks may be an expression of strings (assuming that string theory is correct) or they may be composed fo perticles that have been refered to as 'preons' (although there are a lot of people who don't believe that preons exist). Or they may really be the fundamental building block(s) of matter.

Quarks may be the ultimate horizon going down. There has been a suggestion of particles called "preons" which would make up quarks, but few scientists actually think they exist.

Meaning #1: hypothetical truly fundamental particle in mesons and baryons; there are supposed to be six flavors of quarks (and their antiquarks), which come in pairs; each has an electric charge of +2/3 or -1/3
