It depends on the laws in your area and the service. If you are behind on any bill, you should contact your creditor. This will get you far better treatment than most people who avoid contact with the creditor. If you owe them money, they can sue you. However it is far better for them to try to work something out with you.

it's not so much as they can't cancel or sue... they WON'T cancel or sue if you are attempting to work with them to make payments.
you phone bill for example, they could cut you off for non payment of things like voice mail, etc. so they should your voice mail off, but not your phone. you could have the unpaid balance sitting on your account forever, and they don't care as long you keep paying for your basic service. they best thing to due is call the utility company, work on a defered payment plan or find out what the minimum balance is that you need to pay to keep your utilites on. they should tell you.

Yes, most likely they will send you to collections before sueing. Even 25 a month. Plus during winter months they can not shut off you electic or heat.

These people aren`t the ogres people make them out to be. Call them and try to arrange a payment schedule that would suit them and you. As long as you don`t try to ignore them something can be worked out. Whatever arrangement you come to make sure you honour it because you may not get a second chance and you will have to pay the total arrears.

If you get behind, please call the utility company and they will help you set up payment arrangements. If there are circumstances that keep you from working, they can often times refer you to outside agencies that can help you pay your bills as well.
Just keep in touch with them and once you set up an arrangement, make sure you stick to it. Failing to keep a promise will prevent them from being so willing to help the next time around.
