NO! NEVER drink to escape problems. a) it doesn't work and b) it can start you on the slippery slope to alcoholism and bring you a whole new set of problems.

If you have worries and need to get a break from thinking about them, the best thing I know of is to do some activity that requires total concentration. Shooting is good, so are computer games where you have to be really fast, eg space invaders etc, as long as you can stand doing them, in general anything involving hand/eye coordination that is difficult enough to really challenge you, or activities involving physical challenge like skiing. To work for this purpose the activity needs to demand your total concentration. This is why risk taking behavious often can afford some relief to the stressed.

If you think you have a lot of problems and you may have then there is only one sure way to handle them.

If you think you have big problems then think of this. Nearly all big issues are a combination of little ones.

Take the little ones one at a time and sort them out. Then you most likely will find the big ones seem to go away a little at a time.

Quite often people take on other peoples problems and try to deal with them. This is a very big mistake. You can not solve other peoples problems for them. You can help them to understand how but you can not do it for them.

Instead of spending your money on drinks, why dont you try a short weekend break? Go somewhere rural like a small village, by the sea or something similar...Im sure it will help!

Alternatively, try to do something you've never done before, if you've never been to the theatre, do it now..if you've never been to a salsa class, try it now...just try to do something that will actually help you ease and solve your problems rather than something that doesn't last, is bad for you and makes the problems worse...

It might help to try looking at things from a new perspective.

When you feel overwhelmed, realize that you are being challenged. Try to switch "I can't" with "I am not willing to".

Realize that problems and obstacles are opportunities in disguise. They are opportunities to learn something, overcome something, and improve something. Step up to the challenge, and try to see the opportunity that exists.

Sure, drinking helps to numb yourself from the pain. But how cool is it when you are too cowardly to face it and overcome it? It doesn;t actuall make anything better or go away, but rather hinders your ability to deal with it.

Write down all your concerns. Prioritize them and decide which you are in control of and which you are not. Start with the ones you are in control of and make a plan to address them. Putting them down in black and white can help you see that some things don't really matter as much, but not neglect that that things still need attention. You can then put them aside until ready to tackle them. Frees up your mind.
