I think fighting is a very big part of the game. If some one's messing (checking hard or trying to hurt him) with the best player on the team, then the tough guys need to get the message across that they ARE NOT going to be pushed around and if they continue there WILL BE CONSEQUENCES! They won't let the best players get injured. People have to understand there's more going on then "just a good brawl." It's all about the politics of the game, and I highly respect them for it.
In short it's about teamwork, honor, guts.

I also love an "All-Star" player who fights his own battles.

If you take an even deeper look these guys (the toughest guys) are always the first to volunteer for charity and to help the local communities that support them.

Anyone who doesn't like the fighting and just wants to see the "beauty of the game" should watch figure skating.

fighting is just another part of the game and if the NHL tryed to take it out, i dont think it would be as much fun
games are exciting and when theres a fight, its just like an energy throughout the rink and you can see the players pick up the pace of the game and it gets more physical and very intense!
i also personally think having a non-check league is a waste. (i heard usa hockey or someone was starting a non-check league for the kids who dont like the physicalness of the game and it kinda pissed me off) hitting is part of the game and if you cant handle it, get off the ice.

I guess I'll be the first one to say that I'd love to see no fighting at all in the game. When it's played properly, as it is now in the NHL and has been internationally for a long time, then there's really no reason to take out your aggression in a fight. I played hockey growing up, and even during the roughest games I felt like it was just plain stupid to take yourself out of the game for 5 minutes because of a stupid fight.

I want to see skating, great passes, beautiful goals and hard hits. I don't need the fighting, and we don't need goons clogging up the ice in the "new" NHL.

It used to be a great part of the game and I for one say bring it back. The only way to get to see more hitting and fighting I find is to go to the minor league games.

It's part of the game. Not just in the NHL but in all hockey.

It's part of the game. Sometimes a player needs to stir it up with another guy on the opposition to get his team going. At the same time it also makes the game more fun to watch and something to talk about.

I enjoy that part of the game, and usually like the players who do that aspect of the game. For example I love the fact that the Rangers got Shanahan and have a guy who can score 40 and drop the gloves when needed.

I think it wouldn't be as much fun to watch if there were no fights. The most exciting game I saw in person had everyone on the ice fighting except for the goalies who were just taunting each other. These teams see each other so many times during one season, it just stands to reason that they would occasionally want to knock each other upside the head.

I agree with Habitant. Although it may not be the most sportsmanlike way to handle things, I think it's sometimes necessary to get a team pumped up and get their game turned back around.
