Last night I received my favorite artist's newest album, and I am sad to say that though the cd has a lot of good tracks, I can't help but feel betrayed because his styles and lyrics have changed so much from where he began. It's almost like a comletely different artist. I understand that musicians grow and mature, but sometimes I feel very disappointed with the direction in which they take their music. Does anyone else feel this way sometimes?

Too, too many to name. But just a few:

David Bowie - Great until 'Scary Monsters' in 1980, which was the last of three challenging, diverse albums in a row. But after that, the 'best of' the last 26 years might, if you're lucky, fill a single album with worthwhile tracks.

Elvis Costello - Another great songwriter who just started to take himself far too seriously and thus lost the plot.

Bob Dylan - You have to be quite something to produce nothing worth listening to for the last 32 years and not tarnish your legend.

The Stones - These guys wrote great albums like 'Exile' and 'Sticky Fingers', and now....sad. Very sad. Nothing more than a money-spinning, milk 'em dry circus act now. Definitely not ageing gracefully.

There's a point in time when almost every artist, I think, realises that he / she / they have lost it. But money / ego / hope (or all three) keeps sending them back to the studio or stage.

Quit while you're ahead?

Hey, the music business is a business.
