I spent a week in Sicily alone as a twenty-something female, and I didn't not feel threatened one bit. As a matter of fact, I found the Sicilians to be incredibly kind. However, I also speak Italian, which is very helpful, esp. if you will be traveling to small towns.

If your grandparents were married in a church there, and you let this fact be known, you'll probably be welcome as family. Sicily is really very close-knit, more than the rest of Italy.

I lived in Sicily for 5 years and never once felt personally threatened in any way. However, my house was cleaned out for me once.
