To this day, the fact that The Amityville Horror story was an admitted hoax is still not widely known — as we often say, the truth never stands in the way of a good story. Though the story was made up by the Lutzes and further sensationalized by Anson, there were real victims of The Amityville Horror (the film, not the demons). In addition to the murdered DeFeo family, the subsequent occupants of the Amityville home have suffered a continual stream of harassment by curiosity seekers, horror fans, and gawkers who want to photograph and tour their infamous house. Then there are the people who, fooled by the films' and book's tagline, think they are partaking of works based on true events.

On December 18, 1975, George and Kathleen Lutz and their three children had purchased 112 Ocean Avenue for $80,000. Their brief stay and claims of supernatural activity in the house thrust Amityville and 112 Ocean Avenue into the world spotlight. For the last 25 years, the house in Amityville has stood as an icon of terror. The happy times that any family had had inside the charming Dutch Colonial home, prior to the Lutzes' hoax, has since been ignored. On August 30, 1976, the Lutzes returned 112 Ocean Avenue to Columbia Savings and Loan. According to realtor Edith Evans, the Lutzes never even made a mortgage payment on the house.

On March 18, 1977, Jim and Barbara Cromarty bought 112 Ocean Avenue for a mere $55,000. However, they were unaware of the house's growing reputation. They were forced to change the address to 108 and add a fake window to the front of the house. As a child, Jim Cromarty played in the house, and both he and his wife were determined to make the home a part of the community again. Sadly, they were bombarded with hordes of tourists looking for the ghosts and demons that did not exist. Eventually, the fans proved unbearable, and the Cromartys were forced to put the house on the market. They left friend Frank Birch to tend to the property and act as housesitter while they were away. Neither Mr. Birch nor the Cromartys ever reported any supernatural happenings. The Cromartys eventually moved back in and took the house off the market. They remained in the house happily until 1987 when David Roskin, Barbara's son from a previous marriage, reportedly passed away in a hospital.

On August 17, 1987, Peter and Jeanne O'Neill purchased 108 Ocean Avenue for an unspecified amount. They lived in the house happily until 1997 when they were forced to sell the home because of the high taxes associated with the property ($8000+). According to friends, they chose to spend the money on their children's college education rather than pay the exorbitant taxes.

On June 10, 1997, Brian Wilson (no relation to the Beach Boys) purchased 108 Ocean Avenue for $310,000. He currently resides there with his wife and two children, who periodically leave for college. According to Mr. Wilson, he is extremely happy with the house. In fact, he has spent quite a bit of money restoring the property and scoffs at the notion the house was ever haunted. He asks only that he and his family are left alone to enjoy their property in peace.

yes people live there currently. yes they say it is all bogus. they also hate that people drive by because of the stupid movies. i grew up near it and never saw any indication of paranormal activity. the man went insane plain and simple and heard the voices in his own demented head.
