I rent a home and we are not allowed to use plastic on our windows. Some of the windows are old, and leak air really bad. I tried weather strips last year but it didnt really work so well. Any suggestions? Should I use the plastic anyways? The window in my kids room makes a terrible hissing sound from the wind. Also some of the windows dont have storm doors on them. The newer windows are fine but the old ones are terrible they leak where the window shuts and hits the sill. Please help froze our butts off last year, and lost a bunch of heat and money. Thanks in advance.

The government says you have Tenant rights. Having children makes your case even more important. At this point you shouldn't worry about what your cheapskate landlord thinks. Look at the Web Site below. I think you will find all the info you need.

Good Luck!! and take care of the problem before it gets any colder.

I would suggest simply putting up temporary storm windows. This may constitute "using plastic", which you are apparently not allowed to do, but if your landlord objects, simply tell him that it's his responsibility to maintain sufficient heat in the building, and if he doesn't like it, he can fix the windows. Depending on where you live, having windows that leak may be a code violation for which your landlord would be responsible.

As such, you're probably allowed to do something about it, provided you don't damage anything, so avoid using tacks or the like. Don't do anything that can't be completely and unnoticably removed. But go ahead and do something to improve the insulation.

My suggestion is to buy the window film you apply inside the house. It attaches to the window sills with double sided tape. You heat the film up with a hair dryer, and it creates a drum tight seal. It's 100% transparent, so it can't even be seen from the outside. When you remove it, the double sided tape comes off with the help of a product called GooGone. Just don't let anyone poke it. whether it truly is sealed around the perimeters, then air can not get in that way.. it truly is in all risk entering into by using the a/c itself.. homestead Depot/Lowe/s does sell covers for the gadgets and those covers are fastened on the outdoors... and in case you're no longer worried appropriate to the seems from the outdoors. a lot of people do it themselves by potential of paying for for some good plastic cloth and taping it totallly around the unit on the outdoors to maintain the air from coming in. additionally. I certainly have customary that some people will use an previous gentle-weight blanket to cover the unit on the outdoors and a plastic over the blanket.

Call the better business bureau and ask them what you should do about the windows. Your land lord should have the windows replaced if their not sufficient. There has to be some number you can call for slum lords. I cant believe you cant put plastic on you windows. I'd tell my land lord to kiss my *ss. I'm putting plastic on or fix the dang windows.

Ummm, move or tell your landlord to get new windows in that place. That is uncalled for and until he was paying for your gas and electric bill, I would put the plastice up anyways!

Sounds like the owner is a real jerk and is a 'slum lord'. You need to demand he/she do something or report it, after all, you do have children and their health is at risk. If that doesn't work - then find a different place to live.
