Because it is just the name of the competition - it was probably so named before anyone but Americans played the sport and they simply couldn't be bothered changing it.

For the most part, when the championship series in these professional sport were started, most of the world didn't have a significant source of organized competition. There may have been local/state run teams but no real leagues that were comparable to the one in the US. The names have stuck even though at this point many other countries now have representative leagues.
Also, in these major sports - other countries DO compete. Look at the rosters for the 4 teams left in the baseball playoffs - now look at the country of origin of the players. Same with basketball and hockey - think about the stars in "American" sports. We have many US-born stars, but there's also a great deal of foreign born players - Yao Ming, Vlade Divac, Albert Pujols, Mariano Rivera, Ichiro Suzuki, Martin Brodeur, Paul Kariya - I could spend all day listing stars that aren't US-born players.

Actually the only one they call world series is baseball. And I think there is a team from Canada! LOL The best was when the U.S. lost in the World Cup of baseball. Gotta love it. Unbelievable that Cuba almost won it.

why don't other places start their own world series etc?
