Most of the advice above is very good. I personally think that if the meds aren't working, despite a low fat diet, you may have either biliary colic (where a stone has moved into the common bile duct, causing spasm) or acute cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder usually caused by the stones irritating it). Either way you should go to A&E now and get some pain relief and another ultrasound scan.
If it's biliary colic, you may need a procedure called ERCP, which involves swallowing a tube that probes into the bile duct and can retrieve stones - this is done under sedation. Occasionally a stone can completely block the bile duct, leading to jaundice and possibly pancreatitis which is very nasty.
If it's acute cholecystitis you will need iv antibiotics for a few days until you're well enough to eat and drink, plus regular painkillers.
Even if you see a different consultant than the one your GP referred you to, they won't take your gallbladder out until any infection has subsided - unless it's life-threatening. The reason for this is that operating on an infected gallbladder can lead to septicaemia (blood poisoning) which is obviously dangerous.
Good luck, hope you get sorted out soon.

Find out what consultant you have been referred to (your doctor will tell you). Once you have that info, phone the hospital and ask to speak to that consultant's secretary. Explain the situation and ask if she can fit you in for a quick appointment. If she can't, offer to take a short notice cancellation this often helps get you seen more quickly.
Maybe your doc would be willking to push things along from his end (they can do it!).
The other option is to go to accident and emergency rolling around in pain. You may not see the consultant you have been referred to but you will hopefully get some treatment to ease your present discomfort.
There is nothing I can suggest other than what you are doing that will help.
Good luck, I hope you get it sorted soon.

Quit eating fattening foods. A low fat diet should help. but usually you have to have surgery. The gall bladder stores bile which is a substance that our liver makes to help our stomachs digest fats, when there are stones present in the gallbladder then the bile can't get out into the intestine where is need it to do its job, so it backs up, in turn the gallbladder spams and the fullness from the bile and the stones cause it to get irritated and inflammed or swells and this causes a great deal of pain. So cut back on the fatty foods, and this should give your gallbladder a break, but it sounds like you will have to have surgery sooner than later. Good luck

I had them. Went to the ER 6 times before they found out what it was. Then went to my family dr in between and he sent me to physical therpy for my back. HAHA
ASk whoever you are going to see if they can perscribe you a pain med. When I would go to the ER, they would give me tylonel 3 and phenergran in a shot and that helped right away and it helped me to get some much needed sleep. Good luck, it sucks!

GET TO THE DR. NOW OR THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
YOU HAVE GALL STONES AND THEY ARE MOVING TO YOUR STOMACH.
Drink Cranberry concentrate, it is very acid and MAY help with the gall stones it works very well on kidney stones.
Buy it at a health food store. One pint makes two gallons, unsweetened. Drink 8 oz 3 or 4 times daily.

My mum has Gallstones, and the only thing that helped her was a low fat diet. If that's not working for you, see if your GP can help temporarily until you see your consultant.
Really hope you get it sorted soon - I know how uncomfortable it can be.

get into the dr immediately and have your gall bladder taken out! i waited too long with mine, ended up in the ER with pancreatitis, and had to be hospitalized for a week BEFORE they did surgery! they told my husband that if we would have been just one hour later getting to the hospital, i would have died. GET IT OUT NOW!
