I really hope so, it's been a long time coming.
"Raging Bull" - 1981
"Goodfellas" - 1991
"Age of Innocence" - 1994
"Gangs of New York - 2003
"The Aviator" - 2005

All nominated, but no Oscar.

Beside those above that were nominated, don't forget:
"Taxi Driver", "Cape Fear", "The Color of Money", "Bringing Out The Dead"

He has been a prolific force in motion pictures, it would be nice if he was recognised as such by he's peers.

Whoever said it's a ripoff is an idiot. The oscar would be for 'Best Director', thus making the plot (ripoff or not) a largely (but not entirely) insignificant factor.

Besides, Scorsese never even saw the original. This film is incredible, whether it is a copy or not, and I do hope it wins an Oscar. And yes, I've seen the entire Infernal Affairs trilogy, and people should bless the fact that such great plot concepts are coming into western cinema from the east. It's not like it replaces the Infernal Affairs film, but rather stands beside it.

I have noticed that actors/directors often win Oscars for films that are not necessarily their best work. The reason for this is that they know that person should have won an Oscar, and they're coming to the end of their career and so they just give them one anyway. Personally, I think Scorsese should have got his Oscar years ago. He was younger and less experienced and still making great films and so his earlier films are more worthy in my opinion.

Defiantely not - RIP OFF.

Internal Affairs, the original Hong Kong movie The Departed has ripped off is much better anyway.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve an OSCAR for what he has achieved in films but just not for The Departed.

I really hope so, he's a great director and deserves to win. He's made so many fantastic films and it's sad he's lost out. He's a real talent that should finally be recognized.

Probably not, if you look at the other films that it would have to compete with this year. I do not believe Departed is the best directed of them all.

He should, but if he does, it would be a "pity"/"about-time to prove that we are a serious organization" type of situation. If not for this, he has a better chance of winning "Rear of the Year".
