I think the most exciting development is the use of Carbon Nanotubes. This technology will allow for computers to be designed much smaller, and thereby be faster.

It can also be used to produce long strands to replace high tension wires. Carbon Nanotubes are excellent a passing electricity with almost no resistance. This would save tons of energy and decrease pollution.

It can also be used for life saving devices, such as improved bullet proof vests, because the strength of the carbon nanotubes.

And lastly, because of it's immense strength, it could be used to build a space elevator. While this might seem a little extreme, it is currently being sought after in development and a great deal of research has gone into understanding the feasability.

The field looks promising indeed, although somewhat far from the envisioned nanobots, researchers have found surprisingly practical applications for nanotechnology.
A stain-proof fabric and heat resistant glass are just a couple of the recent advancements.
