Intel is a good site, also try looking at the Wikipedia articles on them, I can tell you basically it is a different architecture, the Conroe uses the new Core Microarchitecture, while Pentium D still uses the old NetBurst architecture of the P4s. Conroes also have higher FSB. If you want real technical detail, check out the sites listed.

Too much detail to go into here. The Intel link I've listed will take you to their page with more detail than you'll ever need (unless you do down and dirty system programming).

The Conroe was code name for the newer Core 2 series the "D" is the earlier dual core processor series
