Try halo or counter-strike. The sims 2 is also a great game but you said you wanted other genres. Sims 2 is a simulation game.

Doom 3 is not bad if you want just mindless action. The game is a little dark but there is no thinking involved...just blow things up. It is only like 18 bucks too.
Also Oblivion is not bad but you better have a good PC to run it. It is expensive but pretty cool too.

try going to wal-mart and looking for command and conquer any of them i per fer c&c (command and conquer) tiberian sun it is a game where you can go online or just do the story this game is vary cool i dont know how much it mite be but shouldint be more then $20.
