I'm assuming that you're talking about the horror movie, The Ring. Well, it's based on the Japanese horror movie, Ringu (a better movie imo), which was in turn based on a horror novel, Ring by Suzuki Koji. I would say that it isn't true, but a lot of Asian horror stories draw elements from traditional Asian ghost stories. That may be why the same token pale girl with long black hair appears everywhere.

The Grudge is based on Ju-on (a much better movie, imho) a theatrical version of a four part series of the same name. As far as I know, this one wasn't based on a novel, but I could be wrong.

The Ring trilogy was written by J R R Tolkien, a professor ot Medieval Languages and Literature at Oxford. He was also a veteran of WW1. The trilogy is derived from a story he made up for his kids, "The Hobbit".
Tolfien felt that a great deal of Ancient British mythology had been lost during the Roman Conquest of Britian and wante to creat what he thought would be a uniquely british mythival world with rich detail seen in the only surviving pre-roman myth "Baowulf".
Also Tolkien was one of the first to promote Baowulf as a great work of literature.

All of these gay PG-13 horror flicks are fake. I went and saw The Grudge 2 and for some reason it didn't scare me a bit. Same with Pulse that movie wasn't scary either. These movies are totally fake. Besides that movie took place in Japan and if it was true it will only happen in Japan not where your at now.

No, but the background is interesting. Tolkein (author of The Ring trilogy and also The Hobbit) was a philologist - that is, he studied languages, with in his case a particular interest in old English, Norse, Gothic, etc. So he decided to have a go at inventing his own language, starting with Elvish. He very quickly discovered that once you got past the sheer denotative language 'This is a table; the cat is sitting on the table, etc.' you needed an underlying mythology to give life to the language ... hence he started to write stories about the elves (most of them preserved in The Silmarillion) and, having got a taste for it, proceeded to invent a whole world of creatures with their own languages and their own mythologies. It's interesting that at no point in any of his writing will you find any words that derive from the Romance languages - he's strictly Nordic.

The notion of a magic ring of power turns up in a number of different traditions - Wagner's Ring Cycle, for example - so he's obviously tapping into an archtype. But your sister-in-law can rest peacefully in the knowledge that it's all done by folk tales and computers. If she wants something to be really scared of, tell her to take a look at trends in modern politics.

Hope that helps.

No, absolutely not. there aren't any orcs or fairies, not taht i know of =p. The inklings is the group where the author, J.R tolkien is a member of. And that group focuses on fantasy.
