You have three dashes available, well, actually the shortest is the hyphen. You know how to do that one, and the "en dash" can be made the way people have said above. You can also make the en dash by holding down the Alt key and then (on the numeric keypad) type the digits 0150 - then release the Alt key. To make the longest dash ("em" dash), use the numbers 0151. It works here also:

type two short dashes in a row (--). MS Word should convert the two short dashes to one long dash automatically. This can be irritating for those who simply wanted to type two short dashes in a row, but if you backspace the long dash out, and type the two short dashes again, it should stay that way.

Type two hyphens without a space before them and a long dash is created. Try Word Help.

put a space in between the dash on each side

I just go to "tools" and find the em dash there but these other mentioned ways are quicker.

type -- then space...it'll automatically do it for you
