NEW YORK - President Bush says he doesn't believe it. Some experts have a problem with it. But several others say it seems sound. Such was the varied reception for a controversial new study that estimated the Iraq war has led to the deaths of nearly 655,000 Iraqis as of July.

President Bush has his own notions of true and what is false based upon what is convenient for him to believe.

Every death of a human is unacceptable. When so many deaths are caused as a direct result of the actions of the American and British Governments, that is entirely reprehensible.

In the statistical world you can manipulate the data to arrive at almost any conclusion. Statistics, for the most part, are useful when applied correctly.

The statement gives a figure of 655,000 dead. How did they die? Natural causes? Murder? or War? Were they killed by coalition forces or insurgents or terrorists? See? It's easy to just throw out a figure without detailing the numbers.

Hypothetical: Scratchbutt, South Dakota, population 500. They have one murder in 2004. The next year they have two murders. How do you state the statistics? One last year? Two this year? or.....The murders in Scratchbutt, South Dakota have risen 100%? The murders in Scratchbutt, South Dakota have DOUBLED?

Compiling the information is one thing, how the results are published can tell an entirely different story.

This number makes sense. I would like to add that this number a little similar to the number of people who were butchered it WW2 death camps such as Treblinka and Jasenovac.

I usually don't believe what Bush says either. The correct answer is somewhere between bush's number and 655,000.

Politicians as usual! We will never hear the truth regarding Iraqi or American deaths but I would suspect that what ever our politicians are telling us it would be at least double that figure! So, when we hear 2500 Americans, more than likely it's closer to 5,000!!!
