Do I need to brush it or clean it? When do you start cleaning a child's teeth?

The American Dental Association recommends that you begin brushing your child's teeth with a little water as soon as the first tooth appears. If you are considering using toothpaste before your child is two years of age, you need to ask your dentist or physician first.

I use the baby tooth and gum cleaner from Target and my baby loves it. I don't do it to actually 'clean' the teeth but to get her in the habit of having something foreign in her mouth rubbing her teeth. She got her first teeth at 5 months and now has 6 and she doesn't mind me rubbing her teeth once or twice with the little finger brush. My older daughter used to scream when we started brushing her teeth. We waited until she was 18 months and I think it freaked her out a little too much. So far my 9 month old seems to be much more receptive to the teeth brushing. I also make sure that she is around when I brush my teeth and then immediately brush hers so she gets to see that we all brush our teeth. Good Luck!

You should actually even clean the gums with a soft rag. And then use a baby tooth brush with warm water on the tooth. Taking good care of baby teeth means healthy adult teeth. Cavities can go down thru the tooth and start decaying the teeth underneath.

No toothpaste till like 2.
Good luck

You can start cleansing their gums even before they have teeth. It a good idea to cleanse away the sugars from the milk and/or food she eats so her new teeth will have a healthy start and she'll be used to it when it is time to start using a real toothbrush. Look in the baby department and get a Johnson & Johnson product called Gum and Teeth Cleanser. It comes with a little finger sleeve that has very soft rubber bristles on it. You just put a little dab on there and gently rub the gums. Some babies like this when they are teething because the rubbing gives them some relief. I used the cleanser and baby orajel when my son was teething. Worked great

Yes you need to bush it.Get a baby toothbrush with really soft bristles. You should also be cleaning the babys gums. You can do that with either the toothbrush or a wet washcloth. My 10 month old had 7 teeth and 3 more coming in and she love it when I brush her teeth and gums. You should start cleaning their gums right away.

Clean the tooth with a little water and a soft facecloth. That's all you need to do for now. When she is a little older you can start to brush her teeth with a small and very soft toothbrush. You can buy baby brushes.

oh my gosh...for everyone above me who said no are you crazy.........You are supposed to use a wash cloth a wipe a babies mouth after they eat even before they have teeth. The build up of liquids can grow bacteria that lie in the mouth causing lots of problems.I have been taking my daughter to the dentist since she was 6 months old every six months and they told me it is best to wipe out the the mouth after every feeding.Gerber had this great finger brush that is really soft and does not harm the teeth .All though right now you do not have to use anything but water they have a paste that comes with the brush. They also make an oragel kind for infants also .

As soon as a tooth emerges you need to clean it. Take a soft towel wet it with water and gently wipe the tooth off. The reason you do this is because when formula or food gets on the tooth if you don't wipe it off right away it can cause tooth decay.

They make kits to start burshing babies gums at 3 months. Formula can rot teeth so you need to make sure you brush the gums and her tooth to prevent this. They actually make a tooth brush that goes right over your finger so you can brush her teeth!
