i was playing oblivion when the monitor went blank, and then every 3d application i try to run has weird black shapes all over it... can something fixable have gone wrong or am i gonna have to get a new one?

the weird black shapes seem to be triangles... as if some parts of the polygons aren't being rendered...

Try reinstalling it.
Go to Device Manager and right click on your graphics card and uninstall it. After restarting, it'll reinstall itself.
Try it, might work.
If that doesnt, try underclocking it...

Although I can not be 100% sure, it is unlikely that a triangular shape be caused by a hardware defect.
Try reinstalling the latest drivers from your video card's manufacturer's web site. If that doesn't do it, then of course try another card.

Could be RAM on vid card. Is it socket-ed or soldered?
