This is a last alternative, but will do the job, as I get hard water stains in my toilet bowl. Pick up a bottle of muriatic acid, and use very little (maybe 1/2 a cup) Be sure you use rubber gloves, and don't get to close to the bottle when you open it, as the fumes are toxic. Just use common sense with it, and don't use it too often, as after a while it can eat away at the porcelin finish of the bowl. You can pick it up at most hardware stores.

I learned this trick in the military: pour a can of Coke into the toilet and let it sit over night. In the morning, just flush and it will be gone. You may have to lightly brush a tiny bit, but for the most part the Coke unsticks a vast majority of the grime.

Bill, it sounds as though you're having to do some serious house cleaning! Mr Clean Erasers work wonders around the house.
There are other brands but Mr Clean work the best. I've used one on the inside of our bowl for hard water stains. It really works!
They're inexpensive, especially if you go to a Dollar Store.
Lots of luck to you.

Make certain the bowl is dry. Apply a cup of vinegar. Leave overnight (if possible) and flush.
Repeat if required.
I like the sound of the 'cola' answer. Tells us what it does to our innards!
